GROWING UP GREEN! Wake up! Wake up! Inciting the Cancer Bats!

In the early 2000’s I did a show in Copenhagen, Denmark at the Pumphuset. I have done shows in that venue since 1989 when I first had Sacred Reich there. It’s an older stone building with a kickass outdoor area, situated in a busy area of the city.

One year when Soulfy played there, I was lucky to have time to check out the opening act, a Canadian band called Cancer Bats. They were badass!!! I made sure to meet the guitar player and tell him that I felt they would be successful if they kept at it. And they did...

Some years later, Incite got fortunate to be offered some UK gigs with the Cancer Bats. Shizzle got real and now, fast forward to 2019 and both bands teamed up again to molten the UK with their Metal!

Liam Cormier is rad AF! Super chill and a Goliath on stage, he commands his ship like a warrior! I’m calling on our UK Tribe to gather our savages and check this tour out! Don’t be delusional! Get caught in the mosh!

GROWING UP GREEN! Wake up!! Wake up!! GBH and Max Wrangle a Wall!

On the Arise tour, I know it was Texas...maybe Houston...the tour entourage and Colin of GBH ended up in my hotel room partying. It seemed like trouble, so I went outside to scope out the hotel. When I returned, Max and Colin were playing a ginormous game of tic tax toe on the wall with a Sharpie.

Turning into Party Pooper, while adding up damages in my mind, I tried unsuccessfully to break up the party. I decided it was hopeless so I went out to sleep in a lounge chair by the pool. Bright and early, I woke up to a tap tapping on my Dr Marten’s. The security was pretty cool but God knows what he thought about a leather jacketed, dyed haired woman snoozing by the pool.

I went in my deserted, trashed room and observed the remains of a game gone sour. I couldn’t sneak out and feel good so I went to the front desk and cut a deal to pay $222 for one wall to be wall papered. Quite a fee in the early ‘90’s!!

GROWING UP GREEN! Wake up! Wake up! Grab your passport! Europe calling!

Last week, we headed out on a 7 week European/UK tour. We flew Condor Airlines for the first time and it was pretty cool, actually. Frankfort, Germany was the epicenter of our meeting up with the band and crew. We piled in the bus and took off for Poland’s Mystic Festival.

The band did a meet and greet signing in the afternoon and then ripped the horizon a new a@s with a stunning setlist of old and new tracks from The Ritual!

Leipzig, Germany was up to bat next! Jet lag setting in with everyone made the days long and our lead boots heavier and heavier. The weather is the hottest since 1914 and no venues have AC. Europe was always somewhat cooler and the buildings old so AC is a rare delicacy. This combination made everyone slightly low on energy. The packed Hellraizer Club gave us a second wind though!!!

Auschaffenberg, an hour from Frankfort was next on our stampede. We have been at the Colos-Saal several times and we know what to expect! Rabid German Tribe members, good catering and no bus parking. All cool because the fans give us what we want! The dressing room is especially memorable since our son, Igor, celebrated two birthdays here and I had one also.

Tomorrow is France, with the French Tribe and that delicious French cuisine! See you there! We have only just begun!

GROWING UP GREEN! Wake up!! Wake up!! One more peak in the past before we head to Europe!

In the early ‘80’s, when we had the Bootleggers’ Metal Club, the first foreign bill of bands we were discussing bringing over was the package of Celtic Frost, Voivod and Running Wild. Their agent sent me a really cool press kit and I was surprised to find these photos in Igor’s scrapbook of Dana’s memorabilia. These were from 1985. The police stole the club before we were able to confirm the dates and the rest is history!!

After the club was taken, I dabbled in promoting shows at other venues. One of the bands I brought to Phoenix was Nuclear Assault, who became close friends with our family. They even stayed at our house a few times, which drive the neighbors into a frenzy!

Atrophy was a band in Tucson who I discovered from their demo Chemical Dependency. I got them a deal with Roadrunner Records and for one year they were the number one selling act at Roadrunner. One of their albums, Violent By Nature, featured a 4 year old Richie Cavalera on the cover, which was designed by the amazing Paul Stottler. I still love their music!

I will be going to Europe tomorrow for 7 weeks with Soulfly and a couple grandkids in tow, so be sure to check out my blogs which will take you on tour with us!! Thank you all for sharing!

GROWING UP GREEN!! Wake up! Wake up! More D-LOW scrapbook treasures!

This week, Dana would have been 44 years old...gone longer than he was here. . On our trip through Igor’s scrapbook of DLOW treasures, I came across this ancient poster and photo.

For one of my besties, Debbie Abono, I made a tour with Sacred Reich and added Debbie’s new act, Forbidden. When the show got to Denver, our agent asked if a new band could jump on the bill. I took the chance and added Faith No More. The crowd didn’t treat them kindly though, so Billie Gould ended the set with a bass thump that seemed endless!! We were like whoa! What a master!! It was slick!

We marveled that Faith No More was about to be on the Metallica tour and were traveling in a van! So boss! We all know what happened after that tour...

GROWING UP GREEN!! Wake up! Wake up! More D-LOW scrapbook treasures!

As the pages turn, more posters and photos to share reveal themselves. This photo of Max and Co. was taken in a favela in Brazil. You can’t safely roam about in these shanty neighborhoods. Just a quick dose with security and out.

These posters represent a tour I made in support of the Chaos AD record. It was an explosive tour, detonated by good times and Metal!

GROWING UP GREEN!! Wake up! Wake up!! Let's go back in time to Nailbomb!

Recently, I found a scrapbook I made for my son, Igor, in 2001. I had stuffed it full of photos, laminates and fliers of Dana's collection of memorabilia. When I browsed through it, I was shocked at what a treasure trove Dana had! I am gonna make the next few blogs from this scrapbook. Share the photos and old school posters with our Tribe!

These rare promo photos of Max and Alex Newport were taken by Kevin Estrada in 1994. He really captured the essence of Max and Alex and their Nailbomb persona! Kevon took the guys to a club called The Sun Club. It was located in Tempe, Arizona and had been lit on fire by a sneaky arsonist! It certainly made a cool location! These photos are extremely rare and the whole set was in Dana's collection.

Enjoy and share!!

GROWING UP GREEN!!! Wake up! Wake up!! I Wanna Be Sedated!!

In 1994, I was fortunate to land a Ramones' Brazilian Tour for Sepultura. Zyon was only a year and half old, but Max and I took him everywhere we went, and this was no exception! I am very happy we got this photo of Z with them...and I am sure he wishes he could remember chilling with them at the pool!!

We played several shows with them, but the most memorable was the show in Curitiba, at the bottom of a quarry! I wont ever forget it because of the scariest elevator ride in the world we all took to get to the bottom! Creaky and tiny, grating along the wall, and stopping at the bottom of a mined out quarry!! A giant hole with walls!! The Pedreira Leminsk holds 25,000 people, believe it or not!! It is surrounded by a wall of rock that is 30 meters high! It was first opened for concerts in 1990. Paul McCartney played there in 1993 and our show was Nov. 12, 1994.

I was going through a memorabilia album I had made Igor, from Dana's collection of bits and pieces when I come across a signed Ramones promo photo!!!! Super cool!! In fact, I am going to take this month and maybe the next to share some of the posters, photos and fliers from that album! Dana would be more than happy to share them with you!!

GROWING UP GREEN!! Wake up! Wake up! Let's Talk DEATH!

The '80's and '90's were the birthplace and growth chamber for many types of Metal...Hair Metal and Thrash were the main rivers bands took to. The Bootleggers was home to many baby bands, and where I started my education. After the city shut it down for no reason, I branched out, trying promoting and band management.

The Mason Jar was one of the Phoenix local hot spots for Metal. I saw Tool, Hanoi Rocks, and Sepultura there and scores more! I cant recall all the bands that flew through Franco's club! I also had the good luck to catch Death on the little stage! Some bands go on into the history books and some disappear. Death is here to stay!

It was a sad day when Chuck announced he was living with cancer. we all know that cancer research wasn't as advanced as it is now. I mean, it still is a flip-a-coin diagnosis! One day, as I was working, the phone rang and it was Chuck. He said he was trying an experimental treatment and was just calling to say hi. Yeah, I was surprised because I didn't really know him that well. If I recall correctly, he was in Tucson or headed there. He sounded strong and hopeful.

Recently, I was helping our son, Igor, pack some of his treasures and I came across a scrapbook I had made him in 2001. Full of fliers and laminates, passes and magazines, it also held a promo pack and letter from the label rep promoting Death! I thought I would share it with my Students here and they could all Scream Bloody Gore!!

This week Max and I went to the Metal Allegiance show here in Phoenix at the new venue, The Van Buren. I had never been there before and I must confess, it was nice inside with a really rad dressing room area, roomy stage and legit cool security! Every where you look, a Metal legend walked past!! Dave Ellefson, Mark Menghi, Chuck Billy, Troy Sanders,Mike Portnoy, Alex Skolnick, Phil Demmel, John Bush, Dave McClain, Phil Rind, Wiley Arnett, Eric AK and MikeyGilbert and oh yeah, Max!!!!

I won't bore you with a long blog since many of you celebrate Easter weekend this week, but if you are lucky enough to be in one of the 4 cities this show is going to, I recommend jumping in the crowd for it!! You don't get the chance to see this many Metal Maniacs on stage together at one time!!

Since Max was here, the crowd got a rare treat of Voodoo Of The Godsend and The Prophecy! Look for yourself!!

Many of you ask me what we do when we are home. People say "now you can rest" or "I am glad you are relaxing." Actually I would have to say home is as busy as being on tour! The only place we can rest is when we are flying! It's the only break lol!

A couple days after got home from Australia, I volunteered Max to have a exhibit at a science and technology seminar at an elementary school. Jason's (Skone) wife, Sian, is a 5th grade teacher and invited him to participate. Her class is studying the rain forest, and Max was supposed to talk about Brazilian percussion. That was easy since we have a mondo collection of instruments from all over the world. He took the berimbau, some beaded gourds, and I even packed him the leg instrument of beads feathers and bird beaks that she wore to record Itsari with the Xavantes! One Mom brought a old photo of her wearing Chaos AD shirt!

There were some super cool exhibits! The Phoenix reptile savers arrived with a collection of snakes and lizards. One lady pulled up with an alligator sitting in her car's back seat! She wrapped a small piece of duct tape around his mouth and said he was a puppy! He was in charge of himself definitely. The kids also showed off their art and experiments! Did you know air has weight? It does!!

Time for some savage fun after that excursion! What to do? We saw a traveling carnival at the nearby mall. That looked good! We packed up some grandkids and off we went in search of pirate adventure! Max never ever road on any type of wizardly ride before so we decided it was time!

Me? I am walking with Roxy and baby Remi taking the pictures as always. The Archiver. I also spot trashy unhealthy carnival food! And I am hella good at the water pistols..but Max always wins haha!

Next we jumped on a plane (nap time) and flew to New York to stroll the New York Metropolitan Art Museum for a private party and tour of the exhibit Play it Loud, which features legendary instruments from artists in the Rock World. Sure enough, Max's Warlock was there!

A meeting the next day for a planned documentary in the making and then blasting back to flight means Read That Book, Glo!! Arrive home and zip off to a protest meeting with a friend and Roki, his first protest. A stupid lady walked around trying to incite people and talking White Power slang the whole time. She walked up to me, her final victim. I whispered "Hey go to your own party" and she blasted out some vicious profanity. Roki was right next to me. I asked him if now he knew why we were there and he smiled. "Yes, Grandma."

The park across the street had a ton of monuments for REAL heroes. The Codetalkers, the men of Pearl Harbor, pioneers, Korean War vets, 9-11, every military event you could think of. Roki soaked it all like a sponge.

The next day Max took Zyon and the rest of his crew to the Phoenix Suns game. Someones gotta cheer!

And last but not least, the next day we went to Jadore's classes' art show at a church in Scottsdale. It was elementary, middle school and high school artists from the Scottsdale area and damn, was it ever impressive!!

And then we made it home for my work week to start. I have Max working on new songs for the South American Beneath/Arise shows in June and I am planning the summer, fall and winter runs, and a few releases you don't even know about!. But today and tomorrow I am playing hooky since my assistant went Cochella!! Hell yeah!! Girls gotta have fun too!
